A taken parking spot in front of the door is the most expensive mistake on moving day. If the truck stands 40 metres away, every single box travels the long way — and the hours add up.
Who is responsible in Düsseldorf?
In Düsseldorf the traffic order for a temporary no-parking zone is issued by the Amt für Verkehrsmanagement. In the surrounding towns — Neuss, Ratingen, Meerbusch, Erkrath, Hilden — responsibility lies with the local road traffic or public order office. The procedures are similar, but processing times and fees differ noticeably.
You can file the application yourself. In practice moving companies or specialist sign services usually handle it, because the permit also involves putting up the signs, documenting them and taking them down — and because an incorrectly filled-in application costs you a week.
How much lead time do you need?
Allow two to three weeks. That is not padding — it follows from two deadlines running back to back: the office needs time to process the request, and the signs must then stand for at least three full days before the zone begins. Only then is the ban effective against vehicles that were already parked there.
What does the no-parking zone cost?
The price has two parts: the official fee for the traffic order, and the service for signs, setup, documentation and removal. In and around Düsseldorf the total usually falls between €90 and €150 per address. If you need the zone at both the old and the new address, the amount doubles accordingly.
Measured against what two extra hours of carrying cost, the zone almost always pays for itself — particularly in neighbourhoods like the Altstadt, Flingern, Bilk or Pempelfort, where during the day there is practically no free spot.
How long does the zone need to be?
- A van up to 3.5 t: about 10 metres
- A typical moving truck (7.5 t): about 15 metres
- Truck with trailer or an additional furniture lift: 20 metres and more
When in doubt, apply for a little more. The extra cost of five additional metres is small; a zone too short for the truck to fit into, on the other hand, is practically worthless.
And if someone parks there anyway?
Then the vehicle can usually be towed at the owner's expense — provided you can prove the signs were up in time. That is exactly why we photograph the setup with date and time. Without that evidence it gets difficult, and moving day starts with an argument instead of the first box.
On moving day call the public order office, not a towing service directly. The authority orders the measure; that saves you arguments about who pays.
