For children a move is not a logistical event but an emotional one. Most of what parents can get right happens weeks before the day itself.
Daycare place: register early, very early
Düsseldorf allocates daycare places through the municipal online portal Kita-Navigator. Registration is possible independently of your moving date, and that is exactly what you should use: register your child as soon as the district is settled — not once you have moved in.
In high-demand neighbourhoods like Pempelfort, Bilk, Flingern or Oberkassel, waiting times of several months are normal. A phone call to your preferred daycare in addition to the online registration never hurts.
Changing schools within NRW
When moving within North Rhine-Westphalia the educational track is preserved — a change is usually straightforward to organise. Inform the current school first, obtain the reports and the transfer certificate, and then register the child at the new school.
A change at the half-year point or the summer holidays is convenient. If the moving date cannot be arranged around it, that is no disaster — schools in Düsseldorf are used to mid-year transfers.
Preparing children for the move
Talk about the move early and concretely rather than treating it as a surprise. Children do not need a sugar-coated version but a comprehensible one: when, where to, what stays the same. Visit the new flat and the neighbourhood together beforehand if you can — the new playground is a better argument than any explanation.
Let children pack and label their own box. It gives them control over something that otherwise happens entirely over their heads — and makes sure the most important things do not disappear into one of the other sixty boxes.
Moving day itself
As blunt as it sounds: moving day works better for everyone if smaller children are elsewhere. Between open doors, heavy furniture and movers who cannot watch out for playing children, a flat mid-move is not a safe environment.
Arrange grandparents, friends or childcare for the day — and set up the children's room in the new flat first. A finished room of their own on the first evening takes much of the strangeness out of a move for children.
